I had to go to Hyannis for an interview with a minister of a church on Main Street in "the big city" of Cape Cod today and I thought it might be a good opportunity to try some street photos.
I learned that street photos are not ever going to be something I can do, even though I admire those that do it so well. This kid caught on to the camera action and hopped in front of me and asked if I wanted to take his picture. So I did. Then he tried to hit on me. Really?
On my way back to my car two different homeless people who were walking towards me turned around and started following me. It spooked me and when I got back to the church a man who volunteers there told me that there is a huge drug problem in Hyannis and they were probably eying my camera with the hope to steal it so they could buy pills.
I like what you've done here. The contrast on this, processing-wise, is excellent. You've done a great job there. First rule is to always stay safe. But then again, you probably already knew that.
Best to go with someone else, but even then...
Great capture though LH. I have to say his eyebrows are so well groomed--much nicer than my eyebrows! I bet he doesn't have a 365 project! :-)
Oh wow! What an experience, Laurie! Just reading this makes me feel uneasy! I had a similar experience shooting graffiti once! I didn't get picked up on but these two hoodlums kept complimenting me on my camera! A tight grip and steady pace back to the car made me think twice! I'm glad your safe! This shot is very good though! You really captured the mood!
You really captured a wonderful shot and the processing is perfect. I'm glad you and the camera are safe! Even though it was scary, kudos to you for stepping out of your comfort zone. :o)
Nice shot and you did it well but your tale makes me a bit nervous. Who knew that Hyannis is broad daylight could have and edge to it like that! Stay safe. Guess you won't have to worry about the safety of your camera his weekend at your mom's. I look forward to some Vermont country charm.
Hyannis really has become such a mess over the past few years. When we were kids WE were the "bad element" around there, but it's gotten much, much worse.
@melissapike I had no idea Hyannis was so scary, especially in broad daylight on Main Street! I could see both the guys following me in the glass storefront windows and it really sketched me out.
Yikes! I like this shot, but wouldn't do this either. I get shots of people washing boats or taking them out of the water. These are real working folks and don't really want my camera. LOL.
This is a wonderful shot. Street photography is a real art form. You have to be comfortable and you have make others feel comfortable. My years of working with the homeless has made me less leery. There is a serious drug problem all over the Cape. People are always surprised by that.
there are definite challenges in shooting street folks. Robin (and I) really try to scope it out and pick choose - but the truth is you never know what you're going to get. Venice is reasonable tame. . .that said - great job - love the processing and if this is your first and last, it something to be proud of!
Nice shot Laurie. Love the title and the story behind it. I haven't attempted any street shots yet. It is intimidating! Glad you got back to your car safely!
He probably figured if you liked him enough to want to take a pic, well....
Great that you tried this...I find I always feel like a schmuck when I do it, even with those kids working for Liberty taxes. It's not for everyone. :-)
Wow...pretty scary stuff. Glad you got out of there OK. I have to say, this is a really great shot. It doesn't look like he's posing for the camera, even though he asked for the shot.
