The only photos I had time to shoot today were work photos, so I give you the tuna fisherman I interviewed for my food column. He and his crew (which consisted of his 16 year old son) caught two 300 pound blue fin tuna today, using harpoons. Here he was showing me the white bronze tip of the harpoon and I liked the candid nature of the shot, plus all the shades of white.
Taken under the canopy by the looks of it. Outside, the colour might not have been so balanced. Lovely shot Laurie. Out of curiosity, did you go any wider, to capture the harpoon?
@sheliwithani I would have loved to have gone wider, but we were cramped in a very small cabin. Any wider and I would have been in the harbor. I had already taken a bunch of posed shots of him and his son, on the docks and some photos of the tuna in the truck with some far off candids of the fisherman talking to the trucker. At this point we were to the interview part, but when he pulled out the harpoon tip, I grabbed my camera even though I was already juggling a notebook, pen and tape recorder. I got the harpoon in his hand and then moved up for a candid of his face. But I could not fit both images in, which really bummed me out.
@orangecrush, @webfoot - I felt like a real photojournalist today. I climbed up on into the bed of a great big ice truck to take some shots of the fresh caught tuna, which is placed on ice the second it is caught and then whisked away in a refrigerated truck minutes after is it docked. Then I climbed down a ladder onto a boat in harbor and somehow didn't fall into the drink. Now I'm writing a review of the world premier of an indie rock musical I saw tonight written by two incredibly talented guys. It's fun, but sometimes exhausting.
Great portrait, Laurie. I love the expression on his face ... seems like you can almost read his mind. LOVED meeting you today. It was so much fun! Sure hope we can do it again if and when your life ever slows down a little bit. ;-)
@numinee It was wonderful to meet you too! My life never slows down. Let's just get together again anyways. If I waited until I had time, I'd miss out on so much of the good things in life.
@carmichaelbev Mom! Julie is scandalized! There were no wiggly things. He fishes for tuna with a harpoon that he throws from the boat. No bait at all, just a really good aim.
@lauriehiggins - I'm pretty sure the fish wiggles. And right about then is when I would drop the harpoon! I caught a fish once in Flax Pond and as soon as I felt the wiggle, I dropped the pole. Fagettaboutit!
My, my....it seems like you had a fabulous day with this fisherman. Who knew? That's a great shot of him, too. He looks very intense and focused, which I guess you would have to be to use a harpoon effectively. I also like the many shades of white against his tan face. Well done, Laurie!
