On this day, 10 years ago, Kalemegdan, Beograd

My posting in Belgrade awoke my interest in photography, it saw me buy my first SLR (film) and my first digital camera (p&s). It was my first time living out of Australia, my first time across the Equator, my first time in Europe. It was not the first time seeing snow, but it was my first time of living with it.

The day I took this was around minus 20 deg C - which makes it approximately 58 deg C (or 137 deg F) colder than my day has been today.

The river in the background is the Danube. Kalemegdan fortress is situated in a strategic place overlooking the junction of the Danube and Sava Rivers. Early mentions of Belgrade were as Singidinum 3BC. The Celtic tribe that held the area was later defeated by the Roman Empire. They were later attacked by the Huns and the Goths. It is rumoured that Atilla the Hun's grave is under the fortress. It is estimated that Belgrade has arisen from the ashes 38 times over the centuries.

Coming from such a relatively young country as Australia, being able to go walking the grounds of the fortress and immersing in the history was amazing for me.

This was my second week of owning a digital camera and I loved that I didn't need to be a frugal with shots as I did with my film camera. At that time I travelled with both my digital p&s and my film SLR.
Love the way the curve leads you out into the view - looks wonderful in the snow. Must be an amazing place to visit.
As someone who grew up in one of Henry VIII's towns with history all around me I remember the startled feeling when I realised how young some countries (like Australia and America) were. But it's taken the 365 project to realise how warm some of them are!!

Beautiful shot Megan! Such a contrast to our weather at the moment hey? A few of us would be wishing we were there, -20 and all!
