It's very pretty. Do you think it might date from the Arts and Crafts period? I like the way your photo shows the smooth front of the tile and the rough texture of the sides. Nice contrast with the surrounding earth too.
We bought a new house some years ago which had been build on the garden of an old Victorian house and we were forever digging up pretty bits of broken crockery. I think it may have been thought good luck to bury broken crockery in the garden. Either way this is very interesting and very well captured Lesley.
@paulaw This is almost exactly the same sceanario as ours. We used to live in the big old Victorian house which is now next door. When we sold it we retained some land and built our house on it, so our garden is the garden of The Red House which was built around 1880. I think this tile may have come from the original kitchen fireplace.
