Yesterday I went back to D.C. as Wreaths Across America had ceremonies and wreath laying at the Vietnam Memorial, Korean War Memorial and the World War II memorial. Today wreaths were laid all across the United States Military Cemeteries. The organization just grows and grows every year and even went overseas this year with the permission of french authorities to bring wreaths to lay on the headstones of all U.S. service man laid to rest at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, locations in Colleville-sur-Mer, France. It all started 20 years ago when the owner of a Wreath Company in Maine had extra wreaths and traveled to Arlington Cemetery to place them on some of the graves. He continued to do it each till one year after it snowed and a photographer snapped some pictures of the headstones and wreaths covered with snow . The pictures were published in the newspapers and went nationwide. Wreaths Across America was born. I donate money for wreaths every year for Arlington and for the last 5 years they have had enough donations to place wreaths on every grave in the cemetery.
I love this picture where you have included the hands of the person laying the wreath. It’s spectacular composition. The clarity and color are gorgeous and definitely deserves my FAV
Today I read this, then went to a party. At the party, a man had just returned from our national cemetery in Santa Fe. He had taken a Boy Scout group to see the wreathes. While there, he found the vault of one of our family members whose husband had died last year. He took a photo with a wreath in the foreground and the vault with his name in the background--very nice photo. I sat next to the widow and showed her your photo and we read your description. Then the friend showed her the photo of her husband's grave from that very morning. It was a moment, Leslie. Thanks so much for sharing.
