Although the area in which I live is a rapidly expanding suburban town, there are still remnants of the farming community it once was. I went to Tractor Supply this evening to stock up on birdseed and wandered past several aluminum bins full of baby chicks and ducklings. There’s still an FFA* chapter at the local high school, and they have a “drive your tractor to school” day. And one of the biggest supporters of our community is our local John Deere farm implement dealer, which I’m told is among the largest. (And that gives me an idea for a future picture!)
*For any non-Americans, FFA stands for Future Farmers of America
Believe it or not, we get a cable channel called RFD (Rural Free Delivery for those unfamiliar with the initials) and my husband and I really enjoy watching some of the FFA programming on it. Last year we accidently stumbled on a speech being given by the secretary of FFA during their national convention. She was awesome! I wish we had a drive your tractor to school day when I was in high school! Cute photo of all the little peeps and quacks. I hope they're going on to barnyards and ponds and not dinner tables!
@olivetreeann It seems to be the trend for people to keep a few chickens so they can have organic eggs. Since I live in a neighborhood, it’s frowned upon, but I have a few friends that give me eggs. I live near Indianapolis which has hosted the annual national FFA convention the past couple of years. It’s big at our State Fair, too.
