Valley Forge Winter Encampment by loweygrace

Valley Forge Winter Encampment

Valley Forge is the location of the winter encampment of the Continental army 1777-1778 during the American Revolutionary War. Only 1 in 3 of the 12,000 soldiers that arrived on December 19,1777 had shoes. By February 1778 2,500 soldiers had died from starvation, disease, malnutrition and exposure.

Today we took a 5 mile hike around the fields. I was sorry this was the only photo I would get because of rain.

Thank you so much for your great comments on my recent Snow Series! Two photos made PP: Happy Birthday Snowgirl and Snow Babies! Thanks for your encouragement!
It's always odd to visit battlefields and other history sites where there is nothing to see now - and think how significant they once were, and how many people they impacted.

Nice shot and I like the way you used the tree in the foreground. Interesting piece of history.

Astounding, what took place here. I can only imagine the misery endured that cold winter. Your picture inspires all sorts of contemplation.
