@gardencat Yes it does. It is a tropical milkweed. There is some concern that planting it outside of it's natural habitat will interfere with monarch migration, encouraging butterflies to start their migration too late. I think I am far enough north for that to not be an issue and we rarely see monarch's any more. Mostly Viceroys. The states listed as having an issue are California, Florida, Texas and South Carolina.
Interesting. My milkweed, up here in Ontario is a plant with a pale mauve globe shaped flower. At the park the other day I got into a conversation with a gentleman who told me he used to have milkweed in his garden and it was a nice bright red flower. That was a surprise to me and now I wish I had asked if that garden was here in Canada or somewhere else. He didn’t seem to be an avid gardener so didn’t know too many details about the plant.
Here is a (not very detailed) picture of my kind of milkweed. https://365project.org/gardencat/365/2015-06-25
It is a yellow top with an orangey/red bottom So the buds look pretty red before they open. I think you have Common Milkweed. This is what ours looks like in the wild. https://365project.org/lstasel/365/2020-07-01
