contrast

" the difference in visual properties that makes an object distinguishable from other objects and the background. In visual perception, contrast is determined contextually "
The final picture taken for 2011, and the contrasts in this shot represent 'difference'. B&W is an obvious contrast, but I also remember at uni being asked to "compare and contrast...." ideas and theories. While the term 'contrast' implies difference, 'different' does not imply superiority.
If I consider my photographical year, I *think* I do some things better now than when I started this project. (I certainly know my camera a lot more 'intimately'!) but more importantly there are many things around me that I now look at differently. Not better or worse, just differently to a year ago. This is my 365 journey.

This image is of Athena, @nicolecampbell's much prized garden statue. Nicole (whom I thank for encouraging me to join 365) and I spent New Years Eve entertaining (?) her other guests with an impromptu photo session in her garden.
The off camera flash was held at the right of the frame resulting in an unusual contrast of the water on the left (blurred @1.6 secs) with the water on the right (frozen in droplets by being caught by the flash light when it fired). It could be considered a 'flaw' in the lighting, but I selected this shot because it represents a difference - old & new / past & present / 2011/2012.

Nicole's shot ( http://365project.org/nicolecampbell/other-photos) uses a different POV and colour, giving a softer and really beautiful etherial angelic shot. Contrasting images of the same subject, both unique and different in their own way.

It is a wonderful thing when there is room enough in our world to see things differently, and value each other for who we are, rather than what we 'should be'. I don't want to live in a 'low contrast' grey world.

Happy New Year everyone!
(rather nice viewed enlarged against the black background if you have time)
Lyn you have made Athena look gorgeous! I could say that it was the person holding the flash but I won't take the credit! Instead I will say that you have a much better eye than I do and I never thought to take the photo in black and white! Great photo and thanks for last night, it was lots of fun. Now put up the other photo too! :)
