painterly fruit

When I first heard that the definition of "photography" was painting with light, it made sense to me --- photographers spend a lot of time controlling or adding to the light in their shots.

Today, I heard a definition that suddenly makes even more sense to me - that it is not the painting with light that is as important as the 'painting with shadow', because it is the shadows that form the dimensional aspects of photographs.
