pitaya not pattaya

I was inspecting this fruit so carefully that the grocer wandered over to proudly tell me that his dragon-fruit were perfectly ripe & sweet. I did not have the heart to disillusion him..... ( ...although I did actually have it for breakfast the next day)

I am trying new shooting angles & focus points with food. I think this one is a bit too tight, but while my kitchen has the best light, it is a tight squeeze for a 100mm macro lens. The weird angles & colours of the dragon fruit meant I don't think it had a "best angle" to shoot from !!
So pretty!

hmmm... the light, colour and focus are lovely! i find food tricky generally for all sorts of reasons... i think this works, but the angle of the table (stool?) kind of nags at me... i wonder if going even tighter, or making it a square crop might work?

@northy the crooked horizon? I decided to leave it for 'tension' but i see now the highlights on the lowest left side of the board are distracting ( causing vertigo!)

I like it - But I agree with Nothy that the angle is a bit distracting. I don't think it needs tension, as the subject seems to be so complete and perfect that THAT becomes for me the interesting part. I like the focus on the stem part and having it in the shot - provides nice focal point that ties the whole image together.

@ltodd i'm migrainous today, so likely more sensitive to that than i might otherwise be... but yeah... the cant would likely work better if you cloned out or darkened that bit...

@northy @vera365 picmonkeyed the horizon

I have never heard of this before! It makes an exquisite photo! How was it for breakfast?

I see now what bothered me before - two angles. The stool, and the fruit on the diagonal. I do prefer this version, although it lost a bit of neg space sround. Fascinating fruit, and the colors. I also like to see kess of brown wood in this version, which, for me, was a bit in disharmony with the colors of the fruit.

i like it! i'm also grappling with how to use a proper macro lens. the depth of field is very compressed, it makes you think about the shape and depth of the subject a lot more. i'd be interested to see this shot focussed 1mm further back so it was a bit less on the stalk, but as it is, it really draws your eyes into the pic.

@marcop thanks for the feedback Marco. I can see now the focus feels a little precarious so far forward. I did shoot some with the focus back on the mid-fruit, but I thought they looked odd with so many angles & pointy bits in & out of focus. Luckily on 365 there is always ....tomorrow!

I love my macro lens & the compression, but the narrow dof can be a bit 2 edged & frustrating. Have you tried Focus stacking with macro? It can give some hyper-realistic results.

@ltodd I had to google it, so no I haven't tried. But it looks good. I've been experimenting with using smaller apertures to get extra depth, but when you don't have a lot of light you have to pump up the sensitivity and then you risk unpleasant grain.
