Magical. A couple of questions...the light on her face, what is the source of it?. The lamps seem to be on the other side. And the red glow around the lights to my eyes seems a bit too much. Brilliant none the less
@jgpittenger Hi jane, my thoughts were that it was twilight ( there was some existing light from the sky visible top left, plus the fog would bounce the light around a lot - there are no hard shadows and the lamp light source is large compared with the girl, so it would wrap quite loosley ( not like a torch light, or noon day light - a bit like https://330d9f16i6fx88u1z1rmakpn-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/562193-1.jpg ) I thought the key light was the one on the left & over & slightly in front of the girls r shoulder based on where she is on the stairs. Because the girls skin was so delicate in colour, when I put too much shadow on the right side it made it look 'muddy', so backed it off.
The building has one sharp light coming on from the right, but I left it in as it was coming from 'out of shot' & not affecting the girl. ( probs should / could have toned it down though !! ). It was a time when darkening using a masked levels layer worked better than dodge& burn overlay layer because of the colour, but I think it did not make a lot of difference 'visually' here because of the relative small file ( pixel size) we had to start with.
The red glow on the lamps was as captured in the stock image so I did not play with it, although I see now, it does look a little 'too much' maybe. I have no idea if my thoughts or approach were correct - it was just what was in my head at the time! :-D
@olivetreeann no no Ann - I have retired from entering WWYD, but it has pushed me to try so much new editing over the years, so I am editing for fun now - time to let a new generation of WWYD editors showcase their work! I do want to keep the challenge alive and people involved!
@adambralston thanks so much Adam! I moved from Paintshop Pro to Photoshop about a year ago which has been a steep learning curve, but any program that uses layers and masks would work. I wish I had more time to do more fantasy stuff. Some of my edits are tagged - http://365project.org/tags/edit-lt
@ltodd Oh I've seen a lot of those. I went through most of your feed for the past year! :) Great stuff seriously. I'd love to be better at fantasy creations. I have so much stock I could use to create worlds. I lack the skill and the imagination.
@adambralston it takes a while as there is so much to learn about putting it together! My ideas always seem to outstrip my skill, but that is how I learn I guess (aka 'the hard way" !) I have learnt a lot from Phlearn and Creative Live, and I have just spent a month getting my keywords organised for my catalogue - that has helped hugely! I adapted the style used in http://lightroom-keyword-list-project.blogspot.com.au/ so I can 'dial up' the elements I need reasonably quickly. Sing out if you ever want to know how I did something. I actually nearly put this church on a flying island, maybe it is time for me to do another one of those...
@mikegifford thanks Mike - but having really ' thrown' myself into wwyd for over 5 years, it is time to 'retire' from the competitive side of wwyd, but I still really love to be challenged by the varied editing concepts that come up. 😃
@ltodd Same here....I've done numerous edits and compositions but I don't post them or tag them at times. I really like one, and it does tie together very nicely! I love devianART but don't post to it, just browse it for ideas at times.
@mikegifford yeah - I also often edit & dont post, but recently decided I would still like to share them with the host, so they could see what I would do. I have also started limiting myself to ensuring I use at least 90% of the original image, so my edit is 'tied' to being an expression of the original image (even though here I moved things -- I have been trying not to move elements unless absolutely necessary.)
