@cottiac no question is ever dumb in photography! I placed my Christmas tree lights about 2 feet behind the pliers but focussed on the pliers - a bit like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPcdWxhLwoA

@ethelperry oh yes - as usual, it was actually more time consuming than I expected in order to get the position of the lights and lighting of the pliers right!
