mama squirrel doesn't think kittens are one bit cute
The first time we let our kittens go outside, the mama squirrel came down the tree chattering away at us, swishing her tail back and forth like crazy! She watched the kittens the whole time, but must have decided they weren't going to hurt her baby. The baby squirrel and kittens were all in the back yard together today.
@peterlgrave I don't really know, Peter. I don't think so, but that mama squirrel was sure not liking the kittens the first time she saw them! Her baby squirrel is smaller than the kittens. I suppose all mothers are protective of their babies.
@lynnz Thanks Lynn,i just wondered because cats are a major problem here with killing native birds and animals.I don,t have much time for them.I have seen feral cats in the wild as large as a smaller dog and they would rip you to pieces if you captured one in a trap. They normally shoot them in the wild.
@peterlgrave well, hate to have to say so, but one of my cats has killed a baby squirrel and also a couple of baby rabbits. It was a full grown cat though, and not a kitten.
@gardencat Interesting to know, Joanne. Our mama cat has been killing baby rabbits and even a bat since she had the kittens, but no squirrels so far (that I know of anyway). She is quite a hunter. We saw a TV program about mother cats having the instinct to kill to show the babies to learn to hunt.
this is so wonderful. kittens are fantastic on their own, but to watch them chasing squirrels is incredible. i would hate to see that mama go after them!
