This is a picture of one of my dogs that I did in pastels yesterday. I learned you can't use bad quality paper and expect a good result. Lesson learned.
Awesome Maggie! Great job rendering the eye. I have been working in pastels lately as well, I love the sanded paper (Wallis) you can do a watercolor underpainting AND it holds a zillion layers of pastel. I am 'heavy handed' so it suits me well. Do you have a web site with your other paintings? Would love to see them! Thanks for sharing :-)
You did a good job on this. I never did try many animals. I think a Jackass once, a rural farm four-legged tractor, if you know the beast I am talking about. That wasn't bad as i also used a paper stump as I would with carbon pencils..I have tried pastels, back in the day, but found I lost half of the color in just moving around. I tried to use the spray they used to make to fix the pastel colors in place but that seemed to dissolve the color and made it worse. So in the end I gave it up.
It looks great! I am so glad to see some of your artwork! You've inspired me to pull out a sketch I've been working on and go to town with it! :) Anyhow, I like the definition in the fur. I definitely want to work with pastels - they intimidate me for some reason, though!
@mandyrob Amanda, I find pastels pretty forgiving. You need to use good paper though. Do your sketch and post a picture. I would love to see it. @semrants Sarah, that cracked me up.
@musikinsey Sally I know better, but I cheaped out. Not again.
@honestabe Abe, with the pictures you have of birds and wildlife, you should try drawing or painting. The fixative I have use before is good. But with this cold I didn't want to use it outdoors. The paper was so cheap I really didn't even want to waste the fixative. The fixative does change the color quite a bit.
@hillcrest Cheryl I have some sanded paper. I have saved it, for I don't know what. I have a dog portrait commission and just wanted to brush up a bit on dogs. So I used this cheap paper that has no tooth at all. I didn't even want to waste my fixative on it. I learned a lesson.
I don't have a web site, but have posted other paintings on these dates on this site...Nov. 27 Nov 29 Oct 16 Sept 2 and Jan 24.
Thanks everyone for the very kind words. I will have to go buy a larger hat tomorrow as my head starting swelling with each comment. It really did make my day.
@friendie Carole, I know better. I cheaped out.
