Manual Mug by marilyn

Manual Mug

Total manual... I took 102 shots to get this! I knew it was going to be too dark, but I was tired of messing with lighting. The mug was so reflective that I had a hard time getting enough light without getting too much reflection. I know I should have either used a diffused flash (too lazy to experiment with it) or something to reflect my light (too lazy to do that, too) so I decided to just post the best of the bad. My kids gave me a flash diffuser for Christmas, but it and the other item were back-ordered, so they should be coming soon!
Next manual practice will be in daylight with something non-reflective! :) On the upside, I feel I learned a bit about the camera and settings.
I am really just starting to understand how all the settings work together. I understand them individually but, to understand how they affect each other takes time...and, you're right, practice.

For me, the learning process is why I wanted to do 365. I hope that a month or two in I will start to feel a little more confident with manual shooting.

@debsphotos @raquelita Exactly... I agree with both of you on your statements... :)

In spite of the darkness it is a great close up and in great focus.. I struggle with that a lot.

Practicing and writing down what we did with each one, does pay off in the end :)

@grammyn I have discovered that I cannot focus unless I am wearing my glasses. It seems so obvious, but I rarely wear them around the house so I forget when I grab the camera I need to grab my glasses, too! :)

@hjbenson That's what we keep telling kids about homework, isn't it? As a matter-of-fact I'd say that is true about all life lessons... maybe not the writing down part, but definitely the practice part! :)

@marilyn LOL! I never thought of that!

bravo!!! once you get the hang of things, manual is the way to shoot...you get so much more control:) I try to just shoot in manual, although sometimes if the light is really tricky i will switch to aperture priority....this is where the fun starts LOL!

Good perseverance!

@4stories I am so far from that point! Thanks for the encouragement. :)
@2thgirl Some in my family call it stubborness! :) Whatever it is, I have it and it will pay off in the end!

I think your camera might actually "tell" you when you're in focus (manually). Check the book for the camera, if you have one.

@debsphotos Thanks... I'll do that. :)

This week we have to practice out of auto for my class. Will be feeling your same frustration! I like your manual mug!

@wannabe Good luck... and thanks! :)

Yay for you and being patient enough to experiement 102 times! ...I have a "for Dummies" book for my camera but haven't even opened it... pretty sure I'm too dumb for the "Dummies" book! :P

@wheatfarmer5 Many of the shots were the same thing, but many of them were with changed settings or just a slight move... I doubt that you are too dumb for the dummies book... too busy maybe, but not too dumb. Besides, you take beautiful photos... no need to mess with a good thing! :)

Love the light in this.

@netkonnexion Thank you so much... :)

great idea!! i should be following your example and learning a bit too....

great shot! :-] learning is always a process!
January 18th, 2012
@kammy It is a struggle for me to find the time and motivation and to retain what I learn! You know what they say about old dogs... and I am an old dog! :)

@boycotting Thanks... Dunny that you said that about learning being a process... We tell the kids that at school all the time! And it is true! :)
