It's just a shame about that perch. I spent a long time, too long really, waiting for him to land on a more natural looking perch. However every time he came near, he picked one of these to perch on.
There is a story about these perches though.
This is at the bird feeding area at a local Country park. Among the various feeders are some tree stumps, standing in a shallow pond. The workman who feeds them wades out and places food on the stumps. The council have been having problems with the Squirrels pinching the food. Maybe that's what yesterdays Squirrel was guilty of.
The councils solution was to build ugly squared wired mesh rectangular towers on top of the stumps. This is what the Bullfinch is perched on. The plan was the little birds could fly through the mesh to the food, and it would keep out the Squirrels. Trouble was, the Council didn't measure the Squirrels.
They have no problem at all of squeezing through the mesh and eating all the food up.
It does make you wonder, when the people running the town are so easily outsmarted by Squirrels !
I can't believe the Council could be so stupid! This has achieved nothing except to make the feeding stumps look ugly! How are the squirrels getting across to the stumps? Are they leaping or swimming? Beautiful Bullfinch though.
However the shot is brilliant even on top of a squirrel proof feeder!
