Probably Bombylius major, one of several similar species, that appear to resemble bumble bees, and lay their eggs in the nests of solitary Bumble Bees, where their grubs parasitise the bumble bee grubs. Even when feasting on nectar from flowers, their wings rarely cease rapid movement.
i don't warm to creatures that do this kind of thing! Your image alongside the knowledge that you convey serves to make this one look very menacing. It is those long legs.
Its legs do look amazingly long. Nature does have a lot of unappealing versions of survival. Makes me wonder sometimes about the concept of a benevolent god.
@gardencat It’s a strange little beastie. Though not very apparent from this view, when it is perched on a flower taking nectar, those long legs are used to cling on to the flower as the wings rarely cease to flap. It was the very rapid whirl of the wings that first caught my attention. I’ve got a couple of other shots, that I might post on here shortly that show it’s weird unusualness !!! .
