Dendrophobia is a fear of trees. Editing for this shot consisted of Picnik's Holga-ish effect and the Winterize effect.
This shot was originally taken October 10th 2011
I dig this a lot - you know I like me some trees. :) I sort of want the main tree itself to be a little bit lighter, so you get more of the bark detail. Hmm. But, overall, good shot!
@beautifulthing
You want the main tree to be brighter, so you get more of the dark detail? I don't understand.....What are you considering the main tree? I stink at processing.
@mej2011 No, the BARK detail. :) The main tree is the big one in the front, IMO. I'm actually talking just a TAD lighter. But, it's something that I think you'd need to do in layers, or that you would need to somehow do JUST to the tree, because the white and the light in the sky behind is going to get blown out. Does Picnik let you process just one small area?
@beautifulthing
I don't think so, but I also have Photoscape and Gimp. In Gimp it is possible to do the layers stuff, I just don't really understand it all. I'll work on it. Thanks so much for the suggestions!
cool tree, not necessarily causing phobia though. Maybe because I'm a treehuggah ... you can use Tint tool in Picnik, remember ? Set it to Screen and paint over the area you want brighter...
@mej2011 not sure... my idea would be to shoot a tree from low POV with camera pointing up, to make it look huge and intimidating. High contrasts, monochrome...
@janmaki
I don't understand the contrasts thing yet. Or thresholds. I was playing with them earlier today on a different shot I thought about posting today. They make everything look cartoony and the outlines are really dark.
Pine trees are also extra scary because they carry the dreaded pine beetles, which are decimating BC's forest faster than anything in 1000's of years has been able to, including forest fires and the logging industry. BC's forests are actually on the list of 100 things to see before they're gone forever within 50 years. Now that's scary.
Anyways, you know I love my trees:) I really like what you've done editwise here, you seem to be trying some different styles and I like!
@pwallis
I am trying different styles indeed. I get an idea in my head (such as "Oh, I want to do a series on phobias") but I have no idea what I want that particular series to look like exactly. What can I say, I'm a work in progress. :)

Tint tool. I forgot. Thanks. Would Shelly's suggestion make this photo more scary for you, or do you have other suggestions?

Why is that?
I was not aware that they kill everything beneath them.
Thanks! I've never seen Poltergeist, so I'll have to take your word on the scary trees.
