Male Ruby Throated Hummingbird

I'm not sure why my background looks grainy to me on the computer, but it looks okay in my camera.

Editing consisted of a crop in Picmonkey.
oh this is so nice!

@myhrhelper
Thank you Kathy!

Your amount of zoom may contribute to the grainyness???

@bobfoto
If I remember correctly, I did not zoom out very far for this shot. Oh well.

@mej2011 - Okay, I see your focal length is 120mm. Much of a crop here?
September 22nd, 2012
@bobfoto
Um........... a little less than half of the green space amount. Does that make sense?
September 22nd, 2012
@mej2011 - It does. Just thinking out loud so excuse me if you wish, but is there a way you can use a Monopod?
September 22nd, 2012
@bobfoto
A monopod? A one legged tripod? I'd have to see about buying one, but I do have a tripod.
September 23rd, 2012
@mej2011 - Do you use your tripod much? I can't stand them myself...
September 23rd, 2012
@bobfoto
Nope, don't like it. It's a pain in the neck to carry around when having to wheel at the same time.
September 23rd, 2012
@mej2011 - I'm guessing it would get in the way of your wheels as well, when set up? That's why I thought maybe a monopod could be easier... you could stand it off to one side and use that as additional support when trying to keep the camera steady???

I think there comes a time in many photographers lives when they start to push the boundaries of their equipment. You know, trying to get that shot that perhaps a faster lens, or a lens for lower light or an external flash for filling in on macro shots. Is there another 365er near you that could perhaps lend you a DSLR with a 300mm lens? That would be where I would start if I had Hummingbirds in my garden...

@bobfoto
I'll look into the monopod idea.

With the camera I currently have, I'm still largely using auto settings. Thus, I refuse to even consider a new camera until I can fully use what I have.

September 23rd, 2012
@mej2011 - wise words. You could always practise the monopod principle by leaving your tripod as three joined legs, all bunched up together???
September 23rd, 2012
@bobfoto
Just came across this, it's supposed to be a tripod for wheelchairs, but it looks way too complicated. http://www.broadenedhorizons.com/3rdhandmount.htm

@mej2011 - I noticed not too many large cameras being demonstrated on that page? Maybe the weight is an issue...
October 3rd, 2012
@bobfoto
Maybe, although I would think if a stand alone tripod can carry the weight, a mounted one should be able to as well, but I don't know.
October 3rd, 2012
@mej2011 - Guess it would depend on how much angle you had on that swing arm. A friend of mine here who uses a chair on occasion, she uses a Gorrilapod with pretty good success, and with a similar bridging style camera like yours. You can wrap the Gorrilapod legs around the arm of the chair. Should I ask her for a photo of how she sets things up?
October 3rd, 2012
@bobfoto
If you and she don't mind, that would be great! Thanks so much!

@bobfoto
Grrrrrrrrrrrr. Why didn't I remember this conversation about 300mm lens before I upgraded my camera last week? lol. Oh well, I guess I"ll have to add such a lens to my "wish" list.
March 14th, 2014
@mej2011 - You got a new camera!?!?
March 14th, 2014
@bobfoto
Don't you pay attention to my photo captions?! lol. I upgraded to a Nikon D3200 about a week ago. It's an entirely new ballgame, even where my birds are concerned.
March 14th, 2014
@mej2011 - Oooooh nice camera!
March 14th, 2014
@bobfoto
Thanks! I'm enjoying it!
