God's Dog by meotzi

God's Dog

Coyote scrounging around in front of my house in late afternoon. He disappeared down back but showed up again 15 minutes later. Dogs were berserk. He scrounged around some more before loping off towards his current den four streets up. Probably a young male who's just left his pack to find his own territory.
Where do you live?!

@narayani I live in a very populated area 13 miles north of Boston Massachusetts. There is still a lot of green corridor for wildlife to travel around fairly unnoticed. The coyotes have been here since the late 80s and I'm used to behaving as if they are somewhere around. They come through my property regularly on their way to and from their dens. My dogs don't go out without me and are always leashed.

Are they dangerous to humans as well as to animals? Is there a risk of rabies from the coyotes?

@seacreature Eastern coyotes tend to be nocturnal mostly because many of them live in populated areas. But if there are cubs in the den, adults have to hunt day and night. When young males leave their packs in the fall, they may also be out during the day as they are traveling and looking for new territory. There have been a few coyote attacks this year. Generally it's because people have been feeding them and they have lost their fear of humans.
Coyotes can get rabies as most mammals can. But the chance of it is low here because most domestic dogs and cats have been vaccinated and many places also use rabies vaccine in bait to treat wildlife in populated areas.
