Yikes! by mittens

Yikes!

I don't know what this is but he was on the wall of the house by my patio. I don't think I've seen a bug like this before. At first I thought it was a cricket but he is too big for a cricket.

Does anyone know what this is?
Great shot, textures, and shadow

It was kind of creepy viewing the images of my 'insect bigger than a cricket" search! lol.

Marilyn don't laugh, but in GA we called these "stink bugs" and if you killed one it would have a terrible odor. Stay away from it. lol Great close up and like the reflections ...

@pippie Thank you, Linda. We have stink bugs here, too, but they look different than this one. They are shorter and flatter looking. I just did some research on the internet and I found a bug called a seed bug that kind of looks like this one. I should look up stink bug and compare how they look to this one.

Afraid I don't , but it certainly looks formidable, nice capture!

It looks like something on the surface of Mars!

Great shadow!

The shadows and textures really make this!

I've been looking online, hoping to help you. I think it could be a wheel bug, but not sure. Look that one up and see what you think. :)
August 10th, 2015
@kimdavis Thank you Kim. I look up wheel bug and it does look a little like this one but I did notice there was a wheel looking thing sticking up on the back of the wheel bug but the back on mine is flat. Maybe there are different types.
August 10th, 2015
@kimdavis I just looked at wheel bugs again and it they sure do look similar. Since I was taking the pictures of the top of him, I may have not noticed there was a wheel type thing sticking up.

@mittens I wasn't sure either. So many interesting insects out there. :)

It's a Wheel Bug but in the Assassin Bug Family!! The younger wheels don't get their wheel until later as they get older, but they are still a mean bug and not one you want in your house!! Smack that thing!!! He's good in the garden for killing bugs but they have a vicious sting that will hurt up to 2 weeks. Look up the Assassin Bug!! Here is a link that looks like yours ... http://kaweahoaks.com/html/assassin_bug_adult.jpg
FAV!

@cashew Thank you for the information, Kathy. There are so many similar looking bugs so it is hard to figure out exact kind he is. Thank goodness he wasn't in my house. I didn't seem him anywhere when I was outside today.
August 11th, 2015
@bruni Thank you Bruni. We have stink bugs here but he didn't look like them. I agree, they are pretty gross looking. :)
August 11th, 2015
You better hurry & get that spray,hA:)
August 11th, 2015
Well, apparently you have found out what the critter is/was. If I saw it I would call my husband to come and squash it. I can't stand bugs! You did a great job getting a close up of it.
August 11th, 2015
It's a bug with an interesting shape. I like the light and shadow, and the colour and texture of the wall. Fav.

What a great find.
I will be a bit limited in commenting on your photos until I am up and running again. Only able to type with one finger at the moment following a wrist fracture and it is slow going.

Great shot of the mystery monster! :)
August 11th, 2015
No idea what it is but glad it's on your wall rather than mine. Kathy seems to have nailed it!
August 11th, 2015
Great capture. Cool-looking bug. Great shadow, too.
August 11th, 2015
You can even make a bug look cool! Great composition against the wall and I love the shadow. You got quite a conversation going too! It's fun to see what fires people up!
August 11th, 2015
Cool shot! The shadows make it look especially menacing!
August 11th, 2015
very brave of you to capture this bug so clearly and focus. well done
August 12th, 2015
Nice focus on the bug, whatever it may be!
August 12th, 2015
Well done. Like the colours and shadows,
August 15th, 2015
Great shot.
Don't whack it...it's more scared of you than you are of it.
Probably :)
