I was amazed to see this Hawk (not sure if it's a Red Tailed Hawk or a Cooper's Hawk) swoop down from a tree in my back yard to capture a squirrel. I ran to get my camera, put the long lens on it and went to the dining room window. He was still there so I was able to get many shots hoping at least a couple would come out alright. I do feel bad for the poor squirrel.
Thank you very much for stopping by.
That is so cool, yesterday I was driving to Daisy’s school when one swooped down and captured a bunny just in the shoulder of the road. I had passed it before my brain even believed I’d seen it. I’m glad you got a picture of yours. Yes, I feel for the prey but the hawks are amazing.
@pej I think this is a Red Tailed Hawk but we also have Cooper's Hawks in the area, so I'm not totally sure of which one this is. Cooper's Hawks seem to be smaller, though.
Fav. I too feel sorry for the squirrel but finding a gorgeous bird like this in the back yard is something I could dream of all my life without it happening. This is a really beautiful capture.
The size and markings makes me think it's a Cooper's Hawk. I think the Red-tails are a little more yellowish on the underside too- which is what gives them the red look when the sun hits it just right. We have Broadwings here and I got a shot of one who'd just captured a squirrel in my neighbor's drive way one day. You do feel just awful for the poor critter but stand in awe of the skill it took to catch it. Great shot!!
