Get Pushed 5 - prepare food (best viewed as a thumbnail)
Beets - I've always thought beets were gross - plain & simple. But one day at the farmers market I verbalized my dislike for them and said "why would anyone buy these things". Well, our favorite vendor at the market said I am going to teach you how to make them and make you a beet lover - he did!
Thin slice the beets, put a thin coat of olive oil, both sides and bake until they caramelize. They really are delicious and VERY Good for you! You can eat the beet greens in salad too, also extremely healthy for you (Google it).
Ok, as far as a photo and challenge I failed here. I don't think this looks appetizing as I was challenged to do. I don't cook a lot and I'm dieting. But this will ONLY be my first attempt - I can't fail this challenge. When given this challenge I thought - ok, piece of cake, well it's not as easy as it would seem. Don't give up on me Ameen I will do better.
Also, the greens are good in salad - in this picture I have some beet greens mixed in with the lettuce (and other stuff).
MY CHALLENGE:
Ameen Ramana
I would like you to capture a cooked/prepared food (any kind) and make it look really appetizing!!
ahhhh, my mom canned those like crazy when I was a kid and the thought of them makes me cringe, maybe I need to re-try them as an adult? Nice shot, great textures
We never eat beets. I don't hate them, but no one in the family loves them. Maybe I should try your recipe.
As far the photo, it's not one of your best. The composition with three basic colors is okay, but the photo has some overexposed areas. But at least you did made an attempt (I have to do that tomorrow) and you have a nice story.
I never thought much of beetroot until we grew some in our allotment. Most commonly here they come pickled in vinegar, which I don't like. Fresh ones are delicious! Much nicer than supermarket ones. I made a beetroot curry with one lot and then a beetroot, red onion and goat's cheese tart. I've been converted! Lots of lovely recipes out there, don't give up.
@snipsnap The idea of canned beets sounds extremely gross and I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole. That was my experience with beets (canned) and hated them. This slice, light coating of olive oil and bake it is very good - especially if you cook it long enough.
My neighbor has been given me fresh beets from his garden for the past few weeks! I hated them as a child, but love them now, as an adult. Like you, I slice them thin and bake them. Beets are high in sugar so they bake up nice and sweet. Yum!
On a different note - I think you did wonderfully for your first attempt. I love the rich red in the beets, and the hint of a salad and lemon in the background is a nice touch. :-)
I find food photography a little diffficult & I don't do much of it. Maybe a different pov so the light isn't so harsh on it. It isn't a fail, terrific composition & colours.
I love beets and I sometimes I feel like I'm the only person under 40 who does. I even like the canned ones that get served with iceberg lettuce in restaurants, lol.
P.S. try this one: http://www.greenkitchenstories.com/beetroot-burgers/ We have a fruit & veg box and got - beetroot! We don't really like them either but this recipe was delicious and even veggie burger haters liked them.
@traeumerlein Your timing is amazing, I went to the farmers market today and the guy who told us about the beets said we should try something called beet sliders - which is like a burger and he said to look it up. Thank you for the link and the comments.
I will keep trying - don't give up on my Ameen Ramana!!

Food photography is tough, that's for sure. I think you did well here.
