We spotted this handsome little chap sitting on some wooden steps in our garden. My youngest son (age 1) was quite intrigued as it did not fly away and he chatted to it for a while as I took some photos. Then I had to stop him from trying to poke it.
To get these close up shots, I reversed the standard canon 18-55 lens with the aperture locked on f/10 and set to about 35mm. Lens was hand held against a 550D body.
@aslessknownsu It takes a bit of trial and error but you can get some nice shots. The depth of field will be very short and you will need to get the lens really close (almost touching the subject). To focus you just need to move closer or further away. It works with just about any lens, does not have to be a lens for your camera, I have some Olympus prime lenses that work well.
Search the web for Reverse Lens Macro, there are even adapters to attach you lens backwards if its too fiddly to hold it in place.

I love your description of Xander's reaction to him.
