Scar in the landscape by overalvandaan

Scar in the landscape

Garth Quarry opened in 1870 to produce granite setts for transport to developing towns and cities. It now produces roadstone and railway ballast. But not for long anymore, there is not much left of the hill.

I wanted to get closer, but there is no place to stop safely and from the entrance of the quarry you can't really see the quarry and the machines.

Looking for urban industrial sites in the country side. For the artist challenge.
Wonderfully composed! I like the green shades and textures.

Nice perspective on how mining takes away whole hillsides. Makes me feel a little guilty for planning granite countertops in my remodeled kitchen.

If this is what we say here - open pit mining, It is really sad.

Looks like a giant has scooped it out with his spoon! Plenty of slate quarries for you to explore in your area? Old lead, silver, etc mines too?

@overalvandaan You've really captured the contrast between the lush grassland & the gaping scar hollowing out the hill.

@dailydelight would love to one day, it's still an hours drive from Porthmadog, maybe when the children are older. @yrhenwr that's a nice mythical comparison! Many redundant slate quarries, Croesor, Tanygrisiau. We've been to the copper mine near Beddgelert. Don't know about lead and silver mines though.

I like how you’ve presented this landscape. You have lines and depth - and an insterresting story to go with it. :-) (I have one of these quarries in my backyard…)
