This is the Colorado Street bridge. I love, love, LOVE this bridge. I often hop off the adjacent freeway and drive over the bridge just because. :-)
According to information I have, it is believed to be the longest curved bridge in the United States and was built in 1913 to cross the Arroyo Seco (Arroyo Seco is Spanish for dry creek or river).
More than 100 people have jumped to their deaths from the bridge, earning it the nickname "Suicide Bridge."
A $27.4 million renovation in 1987 included the installation of spiked railing the entire length.
Actually, that railing is rather easy to bypass if you're intent on jumping.
I have a book of vintage photos which includes 3 of the bridge...it was so much more handsome without the suicide spikes and pedestrian guardrails.
This is also the bridge in my New Year's Day photo of the Good Year blimp, and I'm sure future shots will appear here over the coming weeks. There are SO many different photogenic angles to capture here.
Now that I look at this again, maybe I should have gone with B&W? I'll process it tomorrow and if it looks good, I'll post it in my secondary album for comparison.
I love the lighting on this one, such a beautiful day with you obviously. Nice shadowing and sweep of the bridge. Try it in b/w be interesting to see the comparison
I think it would work really well in b&w. I think that the bridge looks better with the spikes than it did with an extra chain link fencing to make it higher. I have a vague memory of that from a very long time ago. It's really quite a nice looking bridge when seen from below.
What a great shot of this bridge. Although I agree with @mtngal that it might work well in b&w, I think you've captured the warm sandstone tones by posting it in colour and its contrast with the soft blue sky shows up so well. Fav. for me.
