Isn't it just too bright though? It loses definition.
I don't know if there's a way to control that with a P&S, but I had the same problem with the ice plant from a few days ago.
One of the problems with photographing California poppies is that they are so bright. Even using a dSLR it is easy to get too much light/saturation and lose definition. On the other hand, they don't have a huge amount of texture to their petals anyway. If they are blooming there, I'll have to see if there's anything in the Antelope Valley (though it may be too early for them there).
OH what a lovely color! Thank you for sharing all these colorful spring flowers as there have been none here yet. Still getting snow and junk....booo.... Such a fantastic shot here :) Love it!
