Many villagers in Sabang were traditionally fishermen. Now many of the fishing outriggers are used to transport tourists to visit the Puerto Princessa underground river which flows for 8 kilometers beneath the sleeping Buddha (St Paul's Mountain). The underground river was recently declared one of the natural wonder of the world. It has prompted a large area to be declared a national park including the mangrove forests. The island has received a UN award for conservation and environmentalism. Many of the villagers are now employed by the national park as guides or in associated industry. Amazingly conservation efforts have extended to organic farming locally to provide fresh food the community and hotels in Sabang.
