This snapping turtle was spotted while out for a walk, she was digging holes along this gravel road and looked like she was trying to lay her eggs.
According to wikipedia during the nesting season, from early to mid summer, females travel overland in search of a suitable nesting site, usually gravelly or sandy areas along streams. Snapping Turtles often take advantage of man-made structures for nest sites, including roads (especially gravel shoulders), dams and aggregate pits.
Thank you for your comments on yesterday's photo of a Jersey cow in a field of buttercups, much appreciated!
A wonderful close-up shot and info as regards to the Snapping Turtle . No wonder she is looking grumpy digging amongst all that stone and rubble ! - poor girl !:)
Great portrait- boy you really feel the grittiness of the sand and gravel looking at her. We had a turtle lay eggs in our yard when we first moved here- we protected the eggs and thankfully I happened to notice when they started hatching. I know Snapping Turtles are not usually a welcome sight but this is a really great shot of her!
