Thundering surf spawned by a hurricane in the Pacific pounded the So Cal coast today and caused flooding in my little beach town. I think we made the national news. It was the kind of day that prompted many to ditch work to hang out on piers to view the monstrous 12-20 foot waves. I guess I was one of the working few because I didn't get to the beach until just before sunset. By then, the waves were ONLY about 8 feet (still larger than normal) and hundreds of onlookers lined the sandy shore, warned by the lifeguards not to get too close to the surging tide. No one was allowed to walk past mid-point on our pier. It was amazing to see the huge sets of waves pound the shore but they caused flooding that affected more than 30 homes along the oceanfront. Some had as much as a foot of water inside their homes. Luckily, no one was injured
Wow, thanks for sharing this!! The effects of Marie were so much more understated down here.....I had heard about the high surf and went out to photograph the surfers, but there was nothing different from the usual. It was so disappointing! Sorry about the flooding, and I am glad nobody got injured.
