Montecassino, 80 miles south of Rome, is the home of the monastery of St. Benedict, founded in 529 AD. In World War II, the hill was part of a German defensive line guarding the approaches to Rome. The Abbey and the town were assaulted repeatedly by the Allied forces in a terrible battle that resulted in great loss of life. The abbey was completely completely destroyed in an air raid attack in 1944, then rebuilt based on the original plans after the war. This is a shot of the magnificent pipe organ in the main chapel.
