I didn't know what else to do for this photo! I had been wondering what I could find that was velvet for this and didn't have any ideas but then deer came to mind, specifically antlers, so I drove to a nearby shooting range in the hope there was a stag or two around and I was in luck. I know antler velvet is really to protect the new antlers in spring, but I think this counts, even though you can't actually see any velvet!
I'm glad I went along anyway as while I was there I spotted a young male with a puncture wound in its side which didn't look good. I suspect the stag above may have done it as I was there for only ten minutes or so but he was being quite aggressive. I phoned the range owner and told him I'd noticed an injured deer in his herd so he was going to take a look.
@roachling ah, not so good then. Hundreds of deer in Bradgate, and you can get within 10 feet of some of the ones brave enough to graze under the trees at Newtown Linford car park end.
Thanks! Except these are captive, for shooting and as far as I could see there is only one adult stag at the moment!
