in the garden

I'm really struggling with 365 at the moment - my days are long and I have so much coursework to do. I had a hard day - a bit of an awkward one really as it was my last day in my placement, but thankfully I was able to leave early as my car is in the garage and I had to rely on a lift.

I was supposed to be in this placement for the whole year, but I was really unhappy and it wasn't the right kind of place or age group for me. I've made a few enemies within the training alliance by making them find me a better placement but I don't care as I gave up a job I like for this course and I'm paying £9000 to the university for it, and taking on a big student loan, so why shouldn't I have a placement that suits me?! It's a hard enough year without being unhappy with my workplace.

This is just a quick snap from the garden, actually taken tomorrow! I don't know what the plant is, it grows on a bit of dry stone wall and I liked the colours and shapes.
Its a nice plant. Better to move placement sooner rather than later. A year is a long time to be in the wrong environment. OK so a few people may have to do some work to sort out a new placement for you but good for you for sticking up for yourself! I hope the next placement is the right one for you!

@suebarni
Thanks Sue! I knew in May where my placement would be and asked then for an alternative as I knew it was the wrong place for me, but I was ignored then, and it was so much harder to get a new placement three weeks into training!

Good for you for standing up for yourself - I envy your guts, and your reasons sound perfectly valid. I was listening to a thing on the radio this week which was saying that British students are becoming much more critical and demanding of their university courses since they have had to start paying so much for them. I can't remember, is it a PGCE you are doing?

@jantan
yes it is a PGCE, but it's a new one that is school based - one day a fortnight at university, the rest of the time in school. Thanks for your comment, I have always been willing to complain and stand up for myself!

So are you in the same school for the whole year, and with the same class for all of that time? If so it is even more important that you get it right. I did a PGCE as a mature student, and so know what incredibly hard work it was - probably even harder now if you have to get all of the theory done in such a short time.

@jantan
I am mostly at one school for the year, but I'll spend a block of 5 or 6 weeks with another key stage plus two weeks in a special school. After half term, I'll have to do planning and teaching - it is already hard managing school work and all the uni work - I get emailed things to do from uni daily at the moment - I am really struggling! eating and sleeping feel like luxuries at the moment and I keep hoping things will settle down as I get into it, but I think it'll only get worse!

@roachling These are pretty colours. I'm not sure that it does really settle down any more, like it used to. Frantic becomes a way of life:-)

Beautiful colours! How on earth did they expect you to achieve your qualification in a nursery?? I would imagine there would be a lot of objectives you just simply wouldn't have the opportunity of completing! Good for you for sticking to your guns!!

@andrina
Nurseries have to follow the curiculum just as schools do so it is possible to do teacher training with nursery, but I don't like three year olds as I feel more like a mum than a teacher in that setting and I didn't feel it was the right place for me to train - I've done nursery training already, I have enough qualifications to teach nursery children already, I felt I needed to be in a classroom - a full size city class, not the half size rural type I like and am used to, and I really need to get to grips with all the paperwork in teaching - I could have done that in nursery, but it is different in schools - harder - and that's what I need to learn. This year is costing me over £12,000 plus interest in the loan, so I couldn't afford not to stick up for myself! I've only done two days but I'm so much happier already in a school. Thanks for your comments, I appreciate you taking the time to read my blogs and leave me such kind comments :)

Just read your blog on the nursery. Well done for standing up for yourself. It all sounds a bit of a nightmare. It's a shame that you are misssing out on your walking, it certainly recharges your batteries.
