That is so funny! As we were leaving a super bowl party tonight my daughter looked up in the sky and said this exact same thing about the moon! Great minds! And great photo!

Use a tripod, set the timer for 10 sec. I used live view to focus, your camera doesn't have that capability so I would try to get as close to a sharp image in the viewfinder. Take a shot, review at highest mag, adjust focus and repeat until you get a good exposure. The exif data will show you what I used. Your lens isn't the sharpest at 300mm, maybe try a couple of frames at 250mm and review on your computer. I used a 180mm and 1.4x teleconverter. The sharpest exposures will be when the moon is well overhead, the greater transit through atmosphere near the horizon distorts the image more.
Ok, I was getting like a green reflection of the moon in my lens and tried playing with aperture and shutter speed to figure out why! The faster shutter speed reduced the green reflection but the picture wasn't very clear (probably because, as you said, at 300mm my lens isn't the sharpest?).
@kerristephens Take any filter you might have on the front of the lens off for moon shots, the green reflection might be off the front element then the filter back into the lens.
Great shot, I love pics of the moon, always makes me stop and think that we're just a little dot in the grand scheme of things (hope that makes sense :)
