This is a Black-chinned Hummingbird who started visiting the feeders in the last week. It's been really difficult to get a shot of him because the Anna's chase him off pretty quickly. The light has to be just right to catch the purple in the lower half of his gorget, it just looks black otherwise.
Oh I am envious of the wee Hummingbirds that frequent your garden Rob. I'm lead to believe that the black feathers that shine purple and in fact black and it is a trick of the light that allows them to appear purple.
@ozziehoffy I live in Washington State... The hummingbirds are MAGIC! Today I got my very first "real" camera. Went into my garden, turned and saw one... Then, it was gone. I hope you can see one in person. This is a WONDERFUL photo! Kudos!
Wonderful! If I am lucky I will see a ruby throat next week. I have my feeder up, but they mostly just pass through our town and so I could easily miss one if it uses my feeder in passing.
FAV - this is very impressive and I love the splash of purple.
This one is actually perched on branch - WOW. The few times I see them I get a moment's glance and by the time I realize it was a humming bird and not a large bug, it's gone.
I hope, I could see them some day in person.
Good beginning week to you!
