Chawton House was built in 1580 for the Knight family, but is most famously linked to the novelist Jane Austen. Her brother Edward inherited the estate in from a wealthy but childless relative of his father, and later offered Jane and her mother a nearby cottage to live in. The library at Chawton now hosts a special collection of early women's writing, 1600–1830, and there is an interesting exhibition 'Man Up!' of women who stepped into a man's world: https://chawtonhouse.org/whats-on/exhibition-man-up/
