Highclere Castle is home to the Carnarvon family, but is more famously known as the location for the TV show Downton Abbey. It's a great day out, especially if you have an interest in Egyptology. The 5th Earl of Carnarvon sponsored Howard Carter's excavations in the Valley of the Kings, which led to the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, and there is a special exhibition about the discovery.
