The Westbury White Horse is one of the eight White Horses carved into the chalk hills of Wiltshire. It is thought to date from the late 17th Century, and was created to commemorate the Battle of Ethandun, which took place around AD 878. The figure was carved into a chalk hill and required scouring to preserve its outline. In the 1950s it was covered in concrete and painted white. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/bratton-camp-and-white-horse/history/
