It always amazes me just how well a 20 ft iron figure can blend so well into the square, almost invisibly. Maybe, that's part of the thinking behind it, symbolizing the background work that went into forming the backbone of the city.
Iron: Man (colloquially referred to as The Iron Man) is a statue by Antony Gormley, in Victoria Square, Birmingham, England. The statue is 6 metres (20 ft) tall, including the feet which are buried beneath the pavement, and weighs 6 metric tons (6 long tons). The statue leans 7.5° backwards and 5° to its left. It is said by the sculptor to represent the traditional skills of Birmingham and the Black Country practised during the Industrial Revolution.
He does blend in very well but I love the building behind best ! I Like the soft grey & the classic windows & then the people in the front really show up !
I did NOT even notice that until I read your post. I thought you were referring to the metal pole looking thing in the middle when you referred to the iron, and then the people walking when referring to man. How silly am I? I love this sculpture, and your information on it! Thanks for sharing this one!
