My mother quite regularly goes to organ recitals here to listen to the resident organist, Thomas Trotter. If that isn't a Dickensian sounding name then I don't know what is! To be honest, he's younger than his name suggests, being in his mid-thirties. We tease her that she has a crush on him, as she's been going to his lunchtime concerts for years. Apparently he's a bit of a virtuoso and makes women of a certain age swoon with his impressive organ dexterity, one of the finest in Europe (okay, enough teasing) :)
Actually, Charles Dickens gave public readings here to raise money for the Birmingham and Midland Institute, and Mendelssohn's Elijah and Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius were both premiered. However it's not always featured classical music. In the 1960s and 1970s, headline acts such as Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan appeared too.
Now these are very impressive columns, and definitely add detail and beauty to this building. I like the angle and the history given here. Now, where you don't want to see columns like this is outside an Office Depot...sort of cheap and ridiculous looking. I wonder whose brilliant idea that was...
Good for Mum !!! Must give anyone inspiration plying in a grand place like this ! You have managed to convey the grandeur of the building with your angle here so well !
Your mom says she would choose Thomas Trotter over Horatio on CSI. seems she goes for the men who have similar interests before men with nice..AHEM Assets. :)
Organists are amazing in that they must make all four limbs do completely different things all at the same time and in time... and with feeling! I'm with your mom on this one and if I lived closer, would probably be checking him out! ;)
