@scotthouston since the birthday boy is English an Afrikaans greeting would not be necessary although he would understand exactly what being said. Although my parents have lived in South Africa for over 50 years neither has mastered speaking Afrikaans although both can understand a fair amount. Out of interest the Afrikaans greeting is 'gelukkige verjaarsdag'
