The tailfin era of automobile styling ran from the late 1940's through the late 1960s, peaking with these outrageous, over-the-top, four foot tall tail fins (complete with dual rocket tail lights) on this 1959 Cadillac. This example is an unrestored survivor, with rust, faded paint, pitted chrome and the fine patina of age.
Best viewed large. Day 33 of my "35 days of 35 mm" series.
What at a fabulous find. Love the crop and how those tail lights pop right out at you. Those autos from that time were so iconic and don't think we'll ever see them again. Would love to see this one restored.
@cimes1 Ask and you shall receive, Carole - I have a photo of a fully restored 1959 Cadillac that I will post soon, but it was not taken with my 35 mm lens so I used this one instead. And I agree - we will never see anything like this again. I love this era of automotive styling . The cars had character, style and individuality. The older I get, the more I appreciate just how much effort was put into their styling, their details and their annual model year changes. More effort was put into styling their nameplates than is put into styling an entire modern car!
@soboy5 Nice shot Danny. I am fortunate enough to own one of two 59 Oldsmobile 4 door 98 sedans in Australia so the 59 GM range is a favourite of mine. Have a browse thru my pics when you have time.
