Ponte Pietra

"Ponte Pietra" means "Bridge of Stone" and it is the only one of two Roman bridges to have survived: the other, more ancient, was called the "Postumius".

The bridge is placed in a location where, since prehistoric era, there could be a ford, in a crucial meeting point between different roads to which we owe the birth of the city of Verona. A first wooden bridge was put in place during the construction of Via Postumia in 148 BC. In that spot the river reaches a minimum width of 92 meters and the stream comes with a reduced power due to the large meander it must fulfill.

The bridge was restored many times, in fact of the current five spans, the two towards the left bank are from the Roman epoch; the one towards the right bank, together with the tower, was rebuilt by the Scaligeri; the two central ones in the Renaissance period. The impressive remains of these pre-existing three Roman spans now lie on the bed of the river, partly visible during periods of drought.
Very good POV and love the history. Quality of construction lasts.

Massimo are you an historian? Or an architect? I ask because of your detailed, and much appreciated, description of all the city monuments!

@caterina LOL :) Thank you very much but... no, I'm not an historian or an architect.
On my first year at 365 I set myself some goals and one of them was to be informative and, when possible, give detailed descriptions. In that period I also wrote a research about Castelvecchio for a cultural association, so I borrowed some texts and the photos and I posted them here. With this exercise it was simple to write something about other places of Verona.
Anyway, now I'm doing quite the opposite because it's very time consuming and I really can't repeat what I did during 2016.
