This male Mallard was snacking in a grassy open area with his mate until I came along. They both slipped into the creek and it was flowing so quickly, I almost missed the pic.
The Mallard is probably the most abundant and wide-ranging duck on the planet. In addition to the usual threats such as loss of wetlands, a significant threat to their future population is hybridization with other ducks. One source I read indicated that Mallards have hybridized with about 50 other species of ducks and geese.
@dreamer@buccigrossi@hillcrest@luvshorses Thanks folks! I had quite a few decent shots of the pair in the grass but this is the only one I got in the water. I choose it because of the action --- it's out of my comfort zone, so to speak.
I am starting a journal titled, the "missed photos". Next time you'll have to clear a path, get in camouflage and wait patiently for that perfect shot of these two characters swimming by you.
@maggie2 Thanks Maggie! @missvicki Yes, Vicki, hubbie said something similar! I'm learning ... but wait and patiently shouldn't be in the same sentence. lol
