These chickens belong to my friend Lil who lives close by. They are the same ones pictured on July 6th when they were just one week old, [the black ones, not the yellow ones] http://365project.org/sunnygreenwood/365/2011-07-06
I thought at first they might be Marans, but Victoria @kokobilla mentioned Barred Rock, an American breed from the New England area and I think that's what they are. Lil greets them each morning with "I give you food, you give me eggs!" They haven't given her any eggs yet, but any day now ... they'd better; for their own good, just sayin' .... ;-)
This is not the best pic from a lighting or comp point of view --- you had to be there to appreciate the challenge. There were about 20 of us gathered (after dark) at the farm for a meeting about agriculture, all of us viewing the chickens, none of us with any food for them .... could be worse, you could have had a pig shot! lol
Many thanks for dropping by.
ps. If you're still reading and want to hear about feeding time in the summer, read on. The chickens live in a large low cage that doesn't have a bottom in it. Every second day, Lil fires up the tractor and drags the cage up the field to a fresh spot. Any time she fires up the tractor, anywhere on the farm, for any purpose, the chickens get excited and move to the front of the cage, thinking they're getting to move on up the field. By the end of the summer, she had a track of bare ground around the field from moving the cage, just a cage-length at a time. Life on the farm, always interesting.
@kokobillia thanks for the tip, Victoria! Plymouth Rock, or barred rock --- looks like that's what they are! I find the farming stuff very interesting but there's sure a lot I don't know! ;-)
Your friend Lil is very, very smart. Her chickens are getting fresh bugs to peck at every time she moves their home. And they are fertilizing her fields at the same time. Love the shot! Good job.
Look how cute they are!!! Love the shot! They grow up so fast!! How fun she gets to move them! They had to love that!! I only have 5 chickens and know they would go nuts if they got to move around!!
I love chickens! It's so cool that Lil has a mobile poultry coop! I would love one of those, but alas, we only have a third of an acre. I'm very interested in agriculture of all kinds. What was the meeting about?
Cool. Love the way I learn something new every day from someone in a totally different lifestyle to me. Now I know how to mess up a field with a chicken coop! Always wanted to know that. LOL. Nice shot.
Neat shot. Chickens are neat too. I like your story about your friend. Our friend raises chickens in town. She has a limit of 5, but gets a lot of eggs from those 5.
I hope they start producing eggs soon I'm getting a real feeling of dread!!!
