This little hummingbird has been visiting our feeders recently. We normally see the typical male or female Ruby Throated hummers. This one is a bit puzzling. It could be a male ruby throated where the red is so dark it appears as black in this lighting. Or it could be an out of range black chinned hummer where the little bit of violet iridescence under his chin appears as black. Or maybe it's something else. So much to learn about hummingbirds ..... ;-)
Many thanks for dropping by. Glad you liked the tiger swallowtail yesterday. Thanks for all the nice comments and favs.
Wow, he is beautiful. Love the iridescent green colors. I have no luck with hummingbirds. They rarely come by even though I keep the feeder full at all times.
OK yet another comment, how in the world did you ever get to capture this? I can never see / let alone capture hummingbirds as they never sit down or still still for more than a moment! Great job!
Anne, gorgeous capture, I think he's still a ruby throated hummer, mine look like that until the light hits them right and it turns brite, sure looks like them.... I just love them!!!
great capture! Do they molt like other birds? If so, aren't they at times, sort of dull and other times, when new feathers arrive, very bright? Could it be that?
By my bird book, it would be a Ruby Throat - shorter bill and wings than a black chinned.
