As we went across each open courtyard to the next set of buildings, I noticed sets of large copper and iron pots near the entry of each building or gate. Turns out they hold water to be used in case of fire. There are over 300 such pots within the Forbidden City. The oldest ones were cast in the 1400's. Some were decorated with animal heads, rings, etc and some were even inlaid with gold.
