Early for an evening meeting with a river not too far away, easy way to fill in time! These ducks didn't disappoint! I thought at first they were mallards, the male showing off some non-breeding colours but now i'm second guessing myself.
I think the one in front may be a Mallard x American Black Duck hybrid. It's got the white tail feathers of the mallard, but the coloring on the neck, head, and bill look like a Black Duck to me. However, it could just be a non-breeding male mallard, as you say. I guess that pink piece is part of its leg. Mallards have more orangish legs, and Black Ducks more reddish, but it may be the lighting here also.
