I´ve been shooting unfocused pics the whole weekend trying to find the balance; is it too unfocused or not unfocused enough. I´d be very interested to hear what you think about this one.
Not quite sure what you're aiming for here. I'm probably missing something fundamental here, but would have preferred it if the pegs had been in focus. The background is good, but it seems to me that anyone can take an out of focus picture. Can you explain what you were trying to achieve with unfocused photography? Is it about light and shade? This isn't a concept I've worked with at all.
@mercuria Thank you Ariel, I appreciate your feedback. I actually find it harder to take unfocused pics than focused ones, propably cos I´ve taken tens of thousands focused pics in my life and I never have really aimed for this kind of effect before. This is probably not the best concept to do it and maybe you´re right, this pic would work better as those pegs focused. I had those kind of pics too but just found those booring, I´ve probably taken over ten thousand of pics after I started this project, every once and a while I get a little bored with all the normal stuff and have to try new things. It´s just an idea that everything don´t always need to be on focus, you can see many unfocused pics in my fav album if you´re interested to take a look.
I love the effect. For me the colour yellow. Peg unfocused here clashes with the backing tone a little. Such a cool thingvto try as I image it to be tricky. Well done
I think I would have had the pegs in focus. This is where I am with all my Lensbaby images, they are just all completely blurred and I really want to get one area that is in focus, however small. But it's all very subjective! I see wonderful images on here where nothing is sharp but they work! And if you don't experiment with your photography, you feel you aren't making progress. So well done for experimenting!
try Picasa free editing software--they have this soft focusing options--U can soft/blurry some sharp parts of the images like a lensbaby kinda shot--your 50mm is good in this kind of style if u just focus it well.Anyway, I can't tell if this is unfocus or focus cus-i just took my Ambien0lol !
I think it works with the blur and the soft focus, but if I were doing it (and of course, that's why photography is so interesting with all our POVs), I would either have made the blur stronger to capture even more of the abstract feeling, or maybe used DOF to have part of one of them in focus and the rest a blur. But that is really personal preference as it 'works' as an interesting image as is.
Doing your homework, eh ? ;) Interesting subject to try the unfocus on... I think the easiest subjects for this type of photography are something the viewer can "connect" to... like people or animals. They are interesting by default, and due to unfocus, you gently force the viewer to engage the image, fill in the details... Pegs are not very interesting, but I think you were actually attracted by those colors...? At least I am. I feel like more unfocus would've worked very well in creating an abstract image. Engage the viewer by making him/her guess what those bright colored sticks are. Unfocus is really difficult, but when it works, it really works :) Keep practicing!
You have had some really interesting feed back above Susale. Personally I think, in this case, I would have preferred a little more focus on the pegs. But I do agree that totally unfocused is really interesting - I think Jani had some good input there about the subject matter. Well done you for experimenting! Lets see some more of your unfocused ideas...
I agree, it's much harder to take unfocused pics and make them look fantastic. Personally, I think this pic is nice, but I'd love to see the same scene without the pegs and rope - only the background. If I try to isolate only a background here while viewing it, I see a truly wonderful abstract! Thanks for asking this question, it really made me think about what makes unfocused pics so special :)
@chezza Thank you Cheryl, appreciate your feedback very much and you´re right, I really didn´t notice that before but it totally clashes with the background tone, thank you
@nanderson Thank you Nancy for your kind comment, appreciate your feedback very much as always
@witchyjacq Thank you Jacqui, appreciate the feedback and you visiting my project very much
@sturnus Thank you Carol, appreciate your insight and feedback very much. Yes, I think I should have put the pegs on focus, it seems to be the popular opinion here. This kind of photography is tricky indeed but I still need to try different things to make progress, you´re right about that, so I keep trying. Very interested to see those lensbaby pics of yours
@jacjacs68 Thank you Jackie, appreciate the feedback
@jodimuli Thank you Joey, I´ll have to check the Picasa out, thank you for the suggestion and tips, appreciate them very much. Beer, hmm I want one too :)
@carolinedreams Thank you Caroline, appreciate your feedback very much
@taffy Thank you Taffy, thank you very much for your insight and feedback, yes I tend to agree it would have been better that way, to have those pegs merged in the background or put something in focus, thank you very much for your ideas, really appreciate those.
@janim Well I think it´s about time, eh ;) I have a long list of "homework" still to do, you have not been easy on me ;) Yes colours attracted me here but yes you´re right, this is not very interesting subject. Thank you for your insight, as you know I always appreciate your thoughts about my pics very much. People and animals then, have to try to find those, so we´ll keep on practising, no pain no gain :)
@amrita21 Thank you Amrita, appreciate your thoughts and feedback very much, I´m very interested to hear what everybody thinks about my pics, even if it´s just to tell me they think they work
@johnfalconer Thank you John, appreciate the feedback very much. Yes you´re probably right, the the pegs should have been on focus
@happysnap Thank you Linda, appreciate the feedback very much, yes the focus on pegs seems to be very popular opinion here and I tend to agree, it would be better to have those on focus or have more blur. I keep on trying to find the balance, maybe you´re going to see the products of that here later.
@lunaksi Thank you Lunaksi for your insight and feedback, very much appreciated. Yes you´re right, I like that background too and it´s a very intersting idea to show only the background.Thank you for that idea, I have to try that kind of shots out
@zenna Thank you Gayanne, very much appreciate the feebback, glad to hear you liked it.
@janim Totta, olis pitänyt tässä blurrata enemmän, mutta now I know.
In my not expert opinion, I like at least one thing to focus on and then enjoy the beautiful blurry background. However with the car, it looks great all out of focus because it looks like movement and time in slow motion. This still makes an interesting shot though and some would prefer it like it is.
@bristolrose Thank you Katryn, appreciate the feedback very much. I think you're right, it's the illusion of the motion blur that makes it work on car shot. I really learned a lot by posting this here, so next time I know what works and what does not.
I think the background is great - and maybe the pegs could just add a splash of colour if they were a bit more blurry. my view... They are too easy to recognize in the shot.
I really like your exploration of blur. I have never even considered this an option of expression, but now that I see it in your photos and others, it is opening up other avenues of creativity. I really like the simplicity of the composition, the light and yes, the blur, too.
